Fountain
Forestry Incorporated was established in 1980 to manage hardwood forests
in North East USA for private and institutional investors. Today,
fountains has clients throughout the world, and manages 790,000
acres spread over an eleven state region with a value of about $600 million.
The principle species managed are Sugar Maple, Black Cherry, Oak, Ash,
Tulip Poplar, Birch and White Pine. Through our affiliates and developed
associations, fountains also provides expert management for tropical
and European forests.
During
the last 5 years, the company has undertaken timber and property appraisals
on
more than 300,000 acres of privately owned timber and property, with many subsequently
verified through actual market sales or independent valuations.
On
properties managed by fountain forestry the growth in value of the
timber has on average exceeded original projections and appreciated annually
by more than 10%. Based on independent valuations of actual market
sales, investors can expect consistent annual returns in the range of 7%
- 12%.
While
the measure of value of forest management services is taken in growth and
return over the long term, true quality service should be immediately evident
in the woods. fountain forestry invites perspective clients
to inspect our work and encourages comparison to any and all of our competitors.
We offer truly exceptional value in forestry services, ideally suited to
the landowner committed to quality and responsible stewardship.

The Concept
The prime determinant of forestland market value is timber value.
The value of hardwood timber grows significantly faster than the physical volume, and is optimized by professional management.
The Components
- Physical Growth - Trees in North Eastern USA grow at 2-3% per annum. The management techniques used channel this growth into more valuable tree species.
- Ingrowth - Trees are valued according to the end product. The sale value of a good quality tree increases dramatically with diameter, especially as it grows into the next product class.
- Price Growth
| From Management: |
Management techniques are selective toward quality and species, optimizing ingrowth
and unit price of favored trees. |
| Historical Precedent: |
Hardwood lumber prices have consistently exceeded inflation for 200 years. |
| Shifting Global Markets: |
Due to dwindling tropical supplies, US hardwoods have gained prominence worldwide, and prices have soared. |
The combined result of these components produces:
Real Timber Value Growth of 7-9%
Real Investment Returns of 5-7%
The Reality
The concept of hardwood investment has been verified through re-measurement, appraisals and actual market sales on some 100,000 acres of Fountain Forestry
managed property with the following results:
-
Physical growth of timber 2.5%
- Real timber value growth 8.1%
- Real IRR all properties 5.9%
- Real IRR large properties (+20,000 acres) 7.6%
Enhancements
- Personal Use: Fishing, Hunting, Skiing, The Great Outdoors
- Development: Planning permission is easily obtained in most cases
- Sustainable Resource: Naturally diverse and well suited to forest management practices.
The forests of northeastern USA are capable of producing some of the finest quality hardwood timber in the world. Naturally biodiverse and resilient, these forests are truly renewable and well suited to intensive use. As deforestation of tropical forests continues, and remaining public timber reserves are protected, properly managed and privately held timberland will be increasingly important in providing timber resources to the growing world population.

Contact:
Bruce Jacobs, 603.435.8234 (Fountain Forestry)
Dave Bubser, 507.663.1115 (SmartWood)
December 17, 2002
Richmond, Vermont - The SmartWood program of the Rainforest Alliance announced today that Fountain Forestry Incorporated has been granted Resource Manager certification under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The 35 properties in New Hampshire, Vermont and New York that were assessed under this certification comprise 67,547 total acres, making fountain forestry the largest FSC certified Resource Manager in the Eastern US.
“FSC certification has enabled fountain forestry to broaden its capabilities and become truly a full service forestry company,” said Bruce Jacobs, fountain forestry's President. “We chose FSC certification because of its international credibility and recognition, and the SmartWood program for certified Resource Managers as a cost effective way to extend the opportunity for certification to all our clients. As the largest FSC certified Resource Manager in the eastern US, we are now the industry leader in providing certified forestry services. Achieving this stature reaffirms our commitment as a company: To be the measure of quality and value in forestry and related services for private, corporate, and public landowners worldwide”.
Fountain Forestry Incorporated has been in operation since 1980, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of fountains plc, a UK based environmental support services company providing forestry, landscaping, and utility services. fountain forestry is a forest management and consulting firm that provides forestry related services to private landowners, investors and the forest products industry. Services include forest management planning and implementation, forestry investment analysis, timber valuation and marketing, forest property appraisal and sales, and full technical and accounting support. In the United States, fountain forestry's three regional offices in the northeast U.S. were those assessed for certification.
This is the first forest management assessment for fountain forestry in the US, although fountain's UK-based sister company received FSC certification in 2001. fountain forestry is headquartered in Pittsfield, New Hampshire, USA. Further information about fountain forestry can be found at www.fountainforestry.com.
The 10 members of fountain's certification pool include investors, non-industrial private forest (NIPF) landowners, and one non-governmental organization (NGO). Properties range in size from less than 44 acres to 26,859 acres.
Field sites for evaluation were selected at random and then modified to ensure that the assessment team would visit sites owned by most of the property owners in the certification pool. The sites represented a diversity of property sizes, ownership sizes and objectives, forest management plans, past harvesting histories, future harvesting plans, and management challenges. The assessment was conducted using the National Review Draft: Forest Certification Standards for New England and New York, developed by the Northeast Region FSC Working Group, April 2001.
SmartWood is a program of the Rainforest Alliance, an international conservation organization that works to protect endangered ecosystems and the people and wildlife that live in them by transforming land use practices, business practices, and consumer behavior. Established in 1989, SmartWood is the oldest, most extensive certification program in the world and is accredited by the Forest Stewardship Council. SmartWood has eight regional offices and partners with a network of non-profit conservation organizations. SmartWood is headquartered in Richmond, Vermont, USA. Further information about SmartWood can be found at www.smartwood.org.
The Forest Stewardship Council supports environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world's forests. FSC promotes responsible forest management by evaluating and accrediting certifiers, by encouraging the development of national and regional forest management standards, and by providing public education and information about independent, third-party certification as a tool for ensuring that the world's forests are protected for future generations. Information on the FSC can be found at www.fscoax.org.
